    The RTU International Business and Customs Institute (commonly used Latvian abbreviation – SESMI (Starptautisko ekonomisko sakaru un muitas institÅ«ts)) trains specialists to meet the requirements of contemporary globalisation processes. With the enlargement of the European Union (EU), Latvia is also undergoing an increasing integration into the EU. The Latvian national economy becomes more and more dependent on international cooperation and global development trends. At the same time, the world is also witnessing increasing activities of smugglers, terrorists and tax evaders. All these globalisation and national economy focused issues require highly-qualified specialists’ expertise to be dealt with and efficiently countered.

    Studies at SESMI offer not only prestigious education, but also guarantee good career prospects after graduation. SESMI provides studies, training and advancement of professional skills and competences of specialists in the fields of international business, logistics, and customs and taxes. SESMI offers education relevant for working at national public governance establishments, EU institutions, as well as domestic and international business entities. SESMI has always paid special attention to languages, offering study courses for improving the English, German, French and Russian language proficiency. Language instruction is provided by the SESMI Language Instruction Group. The Department of International Business, Transport Economics and Logistics and the Department of Customs and Taxes offer the 1st-level higher professional (college program) education, Bachelor, Master, as well as Doctoral studies.

    SESMI activities are aimed at implementing the study programmes offered by SESMI, active engagement in research, as well as supporting qualitative academic and professional studies in other RTU programmes. The main lines of activities pursued by SESMI are:

  • to provide qualitative studies compliant with the standards of education offered by  the world’s leading universities;
  • to elaborate and recommend for approval SESMI syllabi and study plans;
  • to develop research;
  • to cooperate with production and service sector companies in implementation of scientific and technical projects;
  • to offer training, retraining and professional advancement possibilities for specialists of public governance institutions, production and service sector companies and other organisations.
