Doctoral studies

The aim of Doctoral studies is to implement Doctoral study programmes to educate specialists with the Doctor’s scientific degree. The RTU Doctoral studies are administered by the RTU Doctoral Studies Department and are supervised by RTU Vice-Rector for Science.

The respective institute or department develops the Doctoral study programme in the corresponding scientific branch or sub-branch and coordinates it with the corresponding promotion council, after that the programme is reviewed by the faculty council and approved by the RTU Senate.

RTU offers both full-time and part-time Doctoral studies. Duration of full-time doctoral studies is 3 years. Full-time doctoral studies are financed from state budget grants based on the results of competition; studies can also be financed from students own funds or funds of other physical persons or legal entities. State budget financing can be received for 3 years. Duration of part-time doctoral studies is 4 years and the scope of work is equivalent to full-time doctoral studies.

Full-time doctoral studies are offered for a charge. Tuition fee can be paid by a student, or other physical person or legal entity.

During studies, doctoral students must take part in scientific seminars and conferences, make presentations, as well as publish research results in scientific proceedings. RTU offers the opportunity to publish the results of their research in the RTU Scientific Proceedings as well as to make presentations at annual RTU scientific conferences.

RTU financially supports its Doctoral students as concerns patent application and maintenance. RTU has established a special patents support fund, the resources of which are also used for Latvian patent application procedures and maintenance of students’ scientific research results as their intellectual property, as well as for simultaneously carrying out market analysis and marketing activities.
